Event Director at BarCamp Cyberjaya 2024

I was the Event Director of BarCamp Cyberjaya 2024, hosted by IT Society MMU Cyberjaya on 21 September 2024 at MMU’s Faculty of Computing & Informatics. Entry was free.

What’s a BarCamp?

BarCamp is an unconference. There’s no fixed agenda or pre-booked speaker list. Participants pledge topics and vote on the ones they want to hear. Topics fall into three categories: Tech, Non-tech and Nonsense. Past talks range from “Why Cryptocurrency Failed? From a Technical Perspective” to “Do you like pineapple on pizza?” It’s open to anyone, not just people in tech.

Running it

Our team hit a lot of challenges early on and still pulled the event off. I’m proud of the committee. Everyone did their part to the fullest, and the event wouldn’t have happened without them.

Being director taught me what it means to be a good leader. I made mistakes along the way and learned from them. To help future teams, I wrote the BarCamp Handbook so they can organise BarCamp without starting from scratch.

I stepped down after the 2024 edition, and it was great to watch the 2025 team take it further with 217 sign-ups before the event.
