Web Engineer Intern at MoneyLion
My first internship was as a Web Engineer Intern at MoneyLion, from March to July 2024, working hybrid out of Exchange TRX in Kuala Lumpur. I worked on MoneyLion’s web app and its design system.
Day-to-day engineering
- Built new features and components for the web app and the design system
- Improved performance and optimised the codebase for both
- Fixed bugs and errors as they came up
- Upgraded packages for the web app
Research
I worked on two research pieces:
- Synthetic Monitoring: running scripted checks against the product to catch problems before users do.
- Addressing Core Web Vitals: understanding and improving the metrics that measure how fast and stable a page feels to real users.
Looking back, these two topics were probably my first steps toward the reliability and observability work I’m most interested in now.
Working with a product team
We ran on a Kanban workflow. A big part of the job was communicating with product engineers, designers and managers to agree on task requirements and find the best way to solve each problem. Learning to manage expectations, not just write code, is one of the things I’ve carried into every role since.
After the internship, my fellow intern and I wrote about our experience on the IT Society blog so other MMU students could see what interning at MoneyLion is like. The link is below.
